ACM Programming Contest

September 23, 2017 Local Contest

Hayes 311, 10am-2pm. (Come by 9:45)

1. To have fun programming and to test your skills
2. To compete to represent Kenyon at the 2017 ACM regional contest on October 28 at Youngstown State University (6 will be chosen for two 3 person teams).

There will be 8 problems, ranging from fairly simple to challenging. At least 3 of the problems will be solvable by students with only Intro to C++ completed, and one should be solveable by students currently in Intro to C++.

You should arrive by 9:45, or by 9:30 if you have not yet created a Kattis account. The contest will start at 10am, and go to 2pm. We will provide pizza and snacks.

We will be using the Kattis web site to manage our contest. Because this is not an official contest we will need to use the site in a different way.

Go here to register on the Kattis site if you are not already registered. If you are registered, please login on the site. You can try as many problems as you like. We recommend do a few simple ones to get used to it.

The Link below will take you to a list of links to problems on the Kattis site. You will to try to solve as many of these as possible, as soon as possible. You can use Netbeans (or another development platform of your choice) on the lab computers to develop and test a solution. Then submit it to Kattis for checking and acceptance. If it is accepted, email the solution, along with screenshot of the acceptance screen to Professor Skon at skonjp@kenyon.edu. The teams will be ranked by the following criteria:

Each correct submission will get a score in two halves

  • The first half is the 300 points.
  • The second half is the total number of minutes in the competition (300) minus the number of minutes it took you to complete the problem.
  • I.e., if it took 2 hours to complete a problem, the formula for its score is:
    300 + (300-120) = 480 points.
So the total score will be the sum of the scores for the person.

The above link will not work until the contest opens at 10:00am September 23, 2017.

October 28, 2017 Regional Contest

There will be a regional contest at Youngstown State University on October 27-28. Six students (two teams) plus professorss Aydin and Skon will leave for Youngstown at 4:00 pm on October 27th. There will be a trial contest and pizza party Friday evening. We will spend the night in a local hotel (Kenyon will pay expenses), and the contest will be all day Saturday, ending with an awards banquet (Dinner). We will be back by 8:00-ish pm.
